Mining Have Not Improved People Welfare Yet

Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (Antaranews) - Minister of Environment Prof. Balthazar Kambuaya said, when viewed from economic sector, most of the mining does not provide benefits for improving people welfare rather than resulting postmining impact.

At the coordination and supervision meeting on coal and minerals mining management in Banjarmasin on Wednesday, the minister said the mining activities in Indonesia are still not able to provide maximum economic impact so far.

"From several parameters, among others, taxes, employment, education, local economic growth, infrastructure, pollution charges, costs of social conflicts that have arisen, and some other parameters, it turns out most of the mining companies do not provide a benefit or advantage," he said.

Kambuaya pointed out, of the nine loci studied , only one which has a positive net present value, namely Bogor District.

The rest, including Tanah Bumbu and Tanah Laut, have negative value on the benefits to the economy.

As well as the assessment of environmental aspects, companies that has clear & clear & green are still quite low nationally, so it needs continuous effort that mining and environmental issues could be better.

Special on Kalimantan, the Minister said, the index quality of life continues to increase. In 2009 it's only 60.31 and in 2010 it rose to 64 and 2011 to 68.89 then in 2013 to 2014 it believed would be better.

While in South Kalimantan in 2009 the quality of life index was 48.25, and it rose to 58.24 in 2010 and continued to rise to 60.29 in 2011.

"I think the environmental conditions in South Kalimantan steadily improved, and I believe the future will be better," he said.

Based on data from the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal until March 24, the data of the entire Indonesian IUP as much as 10,918 which has to be evaluated with the result that 6041 have been CNC and 4,877 have not been CNC.

Special in South Kalimantan, said the Minister, as many as 845 that have been evaluated, with the result that 404 CNC and 441 have not been CNC.
